How Japan Fell in Love with Volleyball: The Haikyu Phenomenon

I first got introduced to Haikyu!! through one of my friends, Melvin

He told me I should watch it because he was also my volleyball friend, and even to this day, we still share that connection through the sport. I started watching it and ended up getting through quite a bit in one day. Honestly, it was a really good show.

What stood out to me was how much it made me want to play volleyball in real life.

Sports Inspiration and a New Path

Before Haikyu Volleyball, soccer was my main sport. I was not really thinking about trying something else seriously. But the anime made volleyball look intense, energetic, and exciting.

It showed the effort, the pressure, the teamwork, and the feeling of wanting to improve.

One of my favorite moments was in the first episode. Hinata shows how high he can jump, even against a stronger team.

That scene really stuck with me because it showed how committed he was.

It showed that if you actually commit to something and try really hard, eventually you can get better.

Another moment I really liked was when Tsukishima blocked Ushijima.

Ushijima was one of the strongest hitters and was treated like someone who was almost impossible to stop. He was hitting everything comfortably, and Hinata’s team was getting destroyed. Then, toward the end of the game, the anime slows everything down. The sound effects, the silence, the build-up, and then the block made the moment feel huge. It felt like volleyball in a movie.

It makes sports more enthusiastic. It is somewhat realistic, but also a little less realistic in a good way. The sound effects, the dramatic moments, and the way the characters react make the game feel bigger. It becomes a story.

Character development is another reason Haikyu Volleyball works so well. Additionally, in anime, you follow players during games, and also outside the court. You see how they think, how they grow, and what they struggle with. For example, Kemba from Nekoma was not really athletic before volleyball. He was seen as lazy and someone who played video games all the time. But when he started volleyball, his intelligence became his biggest strength. He was smart about where to put the sets, and that made him a great asset to his team.

If I had to choose a character I relate to or would want to be, I would probably say Bokuto. He is loud, talented, hardworking, and energetic. He is a wing spiker, basically an outside hitter, and one of the strongest players in the show. His personality is always electric, on and off the court.

I think Japan did something really smart by creating more sports anime like Haikyu!!, Slam Dunk, Blue Lock, and others.

These shows are entertaining, but they also motivate people to try sports. After Haikyu!!, there was a huge increase in interest in high school volleyball in Japan. Even people who were not interested in volleyball before started paying attention to it.

That is why I like Sports Anime so much – It can make someone pick up a ball, join a team, and try something new.
